Main purpose of job

 

Working as a Senior Engineer the job’s main purpose is to support the Company’s activities in the global telecommunications software arena, and to provide a competent level of software design expertise.  You will be responsible for performing all, or part, of the software development cycle (from investigation, specification, designing, documentation, implementation, verification to field trial assistance) for a given area of software development.

 

Depending on the structure and size of the team in which you are placed, you may be technically responsible for some junior software engineers within the team.

 

Line Organisation

 

This position reports to the relevant line manager of the team you are assigned to, and ultimately to the Group Manager – Product Integration and has responsibilities to the specialists groups to provide support for all projects.

 

Key functions

 

Under the guidance of the Line Manager, the jobholder is expected to perform (but is not limited to) the following tasks:

 

1.        Carry out, with minimal technical supervision, interpretation of architecture documentation and perform high, intermediate and low level designs, code and unit test activities.

2.        Contribute to designs of large complexity and size.

3.        Provide advice to the line manager and / or project managers for project planning and budgeting etc.

4.        Assist the other team members with their work, technically supporting some junior software engineers within the team.

5.        Assist in identifying staff training and development needs.

6.        Assist in identifying need for and the recruitment of additional members of the team.

7.        Be a technical authority in one or more specialist areas.

8.        To keep abreast of new developments and techniques in the software mobile communications field.

9.        Timely provision of progress reports following the attendance of meetings and resulting from other activities undertaken as appropriate.

Authority

 

Expected to assist in determining the method and resources required to achieve a strong position for the Company in the global telecommunications software arena.

 

Expected to provide advice to line management regarding all business directives pertaining to the Company and corporate philosophies on future strategy in the telecommunications field.

 

All expenditure to be approved by the line manager and kept within current company policy and budget constraints.

 

Skills and experience

 

• A degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering or any related discipline (an equivalent period of industrial experience may be substituted).
• A number of years of experience of real time and / or embedded software development.
• Proficiency in one or more of the C, C++, PERL or Java programming languages.
• Experience in software debugging techniques, software debugging tools and application development environments.
• Understanding of embedded development environments and associated development restrictions.
• Experience of testing software on embedded targets and in the use of basic laboratory equipment is desirable.
• A good level of inter-personal and communication skills.
• The desire and ability to work within a team structure and to learn from other engineers within that team.
• A high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work alone, managing own work and setting sensible priorities according to perceived requirements.
• Good analytical and logical thinking capability.
