Main purpose of job

 

The main purpose of the job is to provide technical/project management capabilities within the organisation.

 

Our client is embarking on an exciting Symbian project within the mobile communications sector. As part of this significant initiative, an excellent opportunity has arisen for a Technical, project manager who will have responsibility for:-

 

  • Technical/Project leads of the Symbian project within the Company.
  • Setting -up of a small core team initially.
  • Recruitment of key engineers.
  • Liaising with Symbian, Nokia and other 3rd party.
  • Being the technical interface with HQ with regards to Symbian project.
  • Planning the programme of work and monitoring its overall progress.
  • Ensuring that the delivery of new or enhanced products/services from the constituent projects is to the required quality standards, on time and within budget.
  • Ensuring maximum efficiency in the allocation of resources and skills within the project portfolio.

Applicants will need the ability to manage staff both in direct report and multi-site project organisations (HQ & 3rd party). They should be experienced in communication to board level and across all stakeholder groups. Therefore a proven track record in delivering Symbian based product, together with motivating and managing staff at all levels within the mobile business is essential.

 

Due to the scope of the project, applicants will need previous experience in managing complex Symbian projects and have an understanding of leading edge mobile communication development activities. Experience in managing or technical lead of Symbian based mobile terminal developments or products is essential.

 

The successful applicant will have a working knowledge of desktop application, including Microsoft Project, word and Excel etc.

 

This job requires close liaison with development team in the Company, HQ and 3rd party. Therefore the applicant must be prepared to travel at regular basis.

 

Line Organisation

 

This position reports directly to Senior Manager in the Telecoms sector.

 

Key functions

 

The main tasks you are expected to perform include, but are not limited to:

 

1.      Carrying out, with minimal supervision, the tasks described in this document.

2.      Have responsibility for the overall Symbian project plan, working with other  members of the project team to ensure the timely delivery of integrated solution.

3.      Keep abreast of market and customer requirements within the Smartphone mobile communications field.

4.      Provide advice and feedback to senior management with respect to Technical and Project management activities.

5.      Provide advice and support for junior members of the Symbian project team and other team within the Company.

6.      Effective reporting of current status to the Company/HQ management.

7.      Effective liaison with HQ with regards to Symbian technology.

 

All work is to be of a professional standard, paying due regard to safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness, time scales and the needs of the company.

 

Authority

 

Expected to take responsibility and determine how to accomplish assigned tasks to defined deadlines. All expenditure must be approved by the Director and kept within current company policy and budget constraints.

 

Skills and experience

 

  • A degree in Telecommunication, Software, Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering or any related discipline (an equivalent period of industrial experience may be substituted).
  • A qualification in an industry standard project management methodology (e.g. PRINCE2) would be advantageous.
  • Significant experience in software development of Symbian embedded real-time systems and/or communications protocols. With some years in responsible positions e.g Project management, Line management or Technical Lead.
  • Proficient Proficiency in C/C++ programming language.
  • Experience in real time software debugging techniques and software debugging tools.
  • Experience in any of the following is highly desirable: Mobile Telecoms Protocols, RTOS, ARM Microprocessors, Device drivers (ISR’s) and Integration or System testing of complex software systems.
  • Ideally experience in the use of basic laboratory equipment.
  • A competent level of presentation, communication and planning skills.
  • A high degree of self motivation and the ability to work alone and manage own work whilst setting sensible priorities according to project requirements.
  • The ability to take responsibility for your own technical decisions.
  • Good analytical and logical thinking capability.
  • A good understanding of documentation requirements.

 

The successful candidate will need to have the ability to gain respect from the other project team members internally & externally, through the level of expertise and maturity they demonstrate. This means that even though this is project management role, the candidate will need to have a strong relevant technical background in Symbian technology.
